EM18// How to: Communicate
This residency -EM18- is designed to give eight east midlands graduates the chance to create body of work to showcase in a two-week long exhibition at Surface Gallery, Nottingham.
The work produced for this exhibition explores our relationship with social media, how it has affected our relationships with each other and the “new-age” of communication. It also asks you to question the level of sincerity and even importance of this communication, which becomes more and more constant with the increasing popularity and “convenience” of this type of interaction.
Although the work is still in the developmental process, I am focusing on creating a filmed performance, exhibiting it in the form of an instillation.
As I have never focused on creating videos before I have found myself experimenting with previously unexplored elements. I have focused on my appearance and how it effects how a performance is seen before, however, this project required me to focus on my appearance from a new perspective.
Elements I decided to focus my attention on include trying to figure the line between anonymity and intimacy, which is felt more through online communication? Also, how do we connect these lines, is it through the absence of the thing we desire, or through the obvious presence of it. I have always been interested in the way we portray our concepts in art, now is the time I decide if its aggressively obvious, or subtly engrained into the work.
When exhibited, the video was displayed as an instillation, using electrical cable and wiring, a mound was created under the phone. This is a representation of the mass dependency on technology.
